Jason’s Magical Butterflies by Somone Grier

This book will leave children feeling encouraged and reassured.

It’s Show and Tell Day at school, and every kid is excited to show off their special interests and skills. Everyone, that is, except Jason. Despite all he’s done to prepare for his magic tricks, he’s got a case of the butterflies and is afraid of embarrassing himself by messing up. But with help from friends, his parents and his teacher, he learns that his butterflies are magical and can use them to face his fears.

Young readers will be able to relate to Jason’s Magical Butterflies, as this school-based story explores themes of embarrassment, nervousness and friendship. This contemporary tale translates nerves into a concept that is easy to understand: the butterflies. Author Somone Grier uses this to touch on big emotions charmingly and humorously, capturing children’s attention and helping them understand how to navigate these feelings.

    Offering Love and Support

While other kids perform their yo-yo tricks and show off their Scout Badges, Jason is afraid his performance won’t go as well. But everyone in his life is ready to help him. Instead of judging him for being nervous, each person in his life gives him encouragement and understanding.

His teacher gives him an extra day, his friends offer supportive phrases (“we’re here for you”) and his parents give him the space to be open with his feelings. These gentle moments are lovely examples that teach young readers that sharing emotions isn’t bad and talking about “feeling blue” can help navigate how to healthily process those feelings.

    Vivid, Playful Illustrations

The tone remains lighthearted despite the heavier topic of emotions, paired with illustrations that give the story a subtle playfulness that feels childlike. Jason’s nerves and how he works through them are supported by lovely images that use facial expressions and genuine moments between characters as visual representations of the story.

These capture the support he feels from everyone around him, which is enhanced by the images that show everything from the love he receives, such as a kiss on the forehead from his mother, to the anxiety he feels, such as him pacing.

    Uplifting Message for Children

The real emotions (embarrassment, fear and nervousness) being experienced by Jason can translate to anxiety, which creates a template for parents and children to have a conversation.

Grier aims to provide a way for children to turn these feelings into magic. This is where the “magical butterflies” come from, and as Jason’s mother says, “release those nervous butterflies, and everything will turn out great.”

This creates a lovely mantra and uplifting tone that aims to help children understand what they’re feeling. And this will leave them feeling encouraged and reassured.

Somone Grier is a student at the Los Angeles Film School, graduating in March 2024. She has been writing stories since high school and one of her poems has been published. She lives in New Jersey with her two daughters.
